On windows there was an initial splash window that opened and then disappeared, but the tray icon was still there and I was able to open the console window to see the sync progress.

Synced in 3 hours. But yes, it does seem the client initially closed. Closed the application during synchronization and reopened and the client opened correctly. Resynced continued and finished in 3 hours as stated.
